Emollients may be all you need to keep mild to moderate eczema under control
(30/12/2009)
Eczema can be related to emotional or physical stress such as exams, family upsets, serious illness or even ordinary coughs and colds. A holiday can often lead to an improvement as the stress of normal day to day life is removed and the increased exposure to sunlight.
The words 'dermatitis' and 'eczema' both mean inflammation of the skin. To Dermatologists the words are completely interchangeable. There are many possible types but the commonest is 'atopic' eczema.
Eczema sufferers are advised to see a Dermatologist who will prescribe an emollient to moisturise the skin and, if the skin is inflamed, a topical corticosteroid to reduce inflammation.
Leading Dermatologist and Managing Director of the Blemish Clinic, Jan Birch explains why emollients are used, “Emollients are non-cosmetic moisturisers which come in the form of creams, ointments, lotions and gels. Emollients help skin to feel more comfortable and less itchy. They keep the skin moist and flexible, helping to prevent cracks. Used every day, emollients may be all you need to keep mild to moderate eczema under control.”
Jan Birch explains, “People with eczema should avoid using soaps, bubble baths, oils and perfumed products as they can be very drying will irritate skin with eczema. Emollient soap substitutes do not foam but are just as effective at cleaning the skin as soap. At Blemish Clinic we advise and help people find on the different products available.”
“Topical steroids are also used to manage of eczema and dermatitis. They reduce inflammation and speed up the healing of the skin. They also help to make the skin less red, hot, itchy and sore.”
