The majority of women with facial hair are middle aged and older. 25% of women suffer from facial hair, and in many of these cases it can be excessive, causing them great distress.

Bernadette Smith started growing hair on her lip and chin at the age of 21. Naturally she was very distressed and her Doctor sent her to a specialist at her local hospital who simply advised her to shave. Over the next few years Bernadette tried all sorts of hair removal products including hair removal cream which burnt her face. Unable to find the right help or advice Bernadette felt she had to accept she would have to live with her condition. This affected her greatly as she lost all confidence, and avoided going out in public.

Ten months ago, having suffered from excessive facial hair for thirty six years she went to the Blemish Clinic in Manchester for a consultation with dermatology specialist Jan Birch. Jan explains, “The disorder in which excessive hair growth is stimulated by androgenesis is called hirsutism, there is a treatment and Janet is making great progress.”

Bernadette describes, “I would search magazines and problem pages praying someone would be able to help me but the advice is always something ridiculous like how to curl your eye lashes. I really did think I was the only one with this problem. Before knowing my condition could be treated I was totally lost and ashamed. Now I feel like I’ve wasted so many years and would urge anyone out there who is affected to get help, I never knew there was any and would hate anyone to go through life feeling like I did.”
